Experience the Magic of Brecon Mountain Railway

Embark on a nostalgic journey aboard our vintage steam locomotives, offering breathtaking views of the Bannau Brycheiniog. Travel along the historic route of the original Brecon & Merthyr Railway, which first opened in the 19th century and closed in 1964.

Our line runs from Pant, 3 miles north of Merthyr Tydfil, to Torpantau, taking you through some of the most stunning scenery Wales has to offer.  Pass through lush woodland, past sparkling reservoirs to Torpantau which sits at 400m above sea level.  Marvel at the mountains and view down the valley.

Travel one way from Pant to Torpantau.  The trip takes 25 minutes.

Please note this is a one way journey only, so suitable if you are planning to combine a walk or some other mode of transport.  You do not return to where you began the trip.

Join us for some February half term fresh air!  Our steam locos undergo maintenance during the winter, so it’s time for our diesels to take a turn!

Take your railway adventure to new heights – literally!

Step aboard our historic caboose and ride in the cupola, a raised lookout above the guard’s van, offering unbeatable panoramic views over the Brecon Beacons. This exclusive vantage point puts you right in the heart of the action, as you watch the steam locomotive work its way up one of the steepest gradients on any heritage railway in the UK.

Whether you’re a railway enthusiast or just love a unique day out, the Cupola Experience offers a new perspective – and a healthy dose of nostalgia – as you journey ten scenic miles through mountains, forests and reservoirs.

Featuring a scone with clotted cream and jam, accompanied by Bara Brith or a Welsh cake.

Enjoy this delicious offering with your choice of tea, coffee, water, or juice.

Served between 11am and 2pm, it’s the perfect way to relax after your 10.30am train ride or as a delightful prelude to the 2.30pm departure

Combine it with a scenic journey or simply savour the moment on its own.

Your table is set with an array of scones, clotted cream, jam, assorted sandwiches, cakes, French pastries, and fresh fruit. Complimented with tea, coffee, water, or juice.

Served from 12.30 pm to 2 pm, this is the perfect indulgence after your 10.30 am train journey or before the 2.30 pm departure. Whether paired with a scenic ride or enjoyed on its own, this is an experience not to be missed! Though it’s called afternoon tea, the generous portions often lead to guests leaving with a ‘doggy bag’!

Enjoy a unique experience as you join our crew on the loco footplate from Pant to Torpantau (5 miles). Experience the locomotive working hard on one of the steepest sections of Heritage Railway in the UK.
You will return in the carriage on the way back.
