Torpantau – End of the Line?

For passengers travelling on the Brecon Mountain Railway, Torpantau is where the journey currently reaches its highest point—and where the line comes to an end. But has it always been the end of the railway, and could trains ever travel farther in the future?

In our latest video, Ioan and Stuart head beyond the present-day platform to explore Torpantau’s railway past, its surviving remains and some of the possibilities—however challenging—for the future.

Discovering the old Torpantau

The station used by the Brecon Mountain Railway today is not the original Torpantau station. Beyond the current terminus, traces of the former railway can still be found in the landscape, including the remains of the old station.

These fragments offer a tantalising glimpse of the route as it once was. Although nature has gradually reclaimed much of the old railway, the formation can still be followed in places and features of the original line remain visible.

Ioan and Stuart explore these remains before continuing towards one of the most significant surviving structures on this section of the route: Torpantau Tunnel.

Reaching the portal involves a decidedly wet walk, with plenty of water along the old trackbed! The tunnel entrance is an impressive reminder that the railway once continued through the mountain rather than ending where our trains stop today.

Could the BMR be extended?

It is one of the questions we are asked most frequently: will the Brecon Mountain Railway ever extend beyond Torpantau?

The landscape and surviving trackbed naturally invite people to imagine what might be possible. Could the railway continue towards the tunnel? Could a new destination be created beyond the present terminus? Might an entirely different extension offer greater benefits?

There are possibilities—but none of them would be simple.

Any extension would involve significant practical, environmental and financial challenges. Land ownership, engineering works, access, ongoing maintenance and the cost of laying and operating additional railway would all need to be considered. Most importantly, such a project would need to create a worthwhile experience for visitors and generate enough additional income to justify the investment.

Extending a railway is about much more than adding a length of track. It would have to work operationally, improve the visitor experience and be sustainable for many years to come.

There are therefore no firm plans to extend the railway at present. However, railways have always encouraged ambitious ideas—and perhaps we should never say never.
