Wonderful outing

The was a lovely experience, the staff and train driver and conductor were extremely friendly. They keep you informed of the local sights and where the train will be and what time it is returning. And you can go back on a later train if you want to go for a walk. Wonderful day and absolutely perfect for young kids 😊

A Welsh steam railway with great views

A "there and back" steam train ride through lovely countryside. If possible, get a seat on the west side, with views across the valley and reservoirs. The train turns back after about 5 miles, with a stop at one station on the way back where there is a cafe, toilets and chance to walk to the reservoir dam

A lovely chuff-chuff experience

A very pleasant way to spend a few hours. The scenery is beautiful and the steam engines charming. The train stops beside a picturesque reservoir for 30 minutes on the return journey and makes an ideal spot for a picnic. There is also a small children play area to let the little ones burn off some steam!

You won't be disappointed

Easy to book over the phone, very polite and helpful staff. Great restaurant at the main station at Pant, best tasting bacon roll I have had in years. Train ride was very good, plenty of information provided over the tannoy, and Driver, fireman and conductor all very friendly and helpful. The only let down was the weather, drizzle and low cloud base meant that the views were limited. Would recommend to anyone.

TRAVEL ON A VINTAGE TRAIN WITH BRECON MOUNTAIN RAILWAY

Discover one of the best days out in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) with the Brecon Mountain Railway.
Starting from our main station at Pant, just north of Merthyr Tydfil, the railway offers a scenic 9.5-mile return journey through the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. The line follows part of the historic Brecon & Merthyr Railway, which originally opened in the 19th century and closed in 1964.

Travel in comfort in our all-weather observation carriages, hauled by a beautifully restored vintage steam locomotive. The route winds past Pontsticill, alongside the full length of the Taf Fechan Reservoir, and climbs towards Torpantau, one of the highest railway summits in Britain.

At Pant Station, visitors can enjoy our licensed Tearooms, browse the railway shop for gifts and souvenirs, and take a look inside our engineering workshop, where our locomotives and carriages are maintained.

All trains run non-stop from Pant to Torpantau. On the return journey, trains stop at Pontsticill Station, where you can relax at our Lakeside Café, take in the views across the reservoir, enjoy walks into Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), or make use of the children’s play area.

Whether you’re planning a family day out, a scenic journey through Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), or a visit for heritage railway enthusiasts, the Brecon Mountain Railway offers a memorable experience for all ages.

Your table is set with an array of scones, clotted cream, jam, assorted sandwiches, cakes, French pastries, and fresh fruit. Complimented with tea, coffee, water, or juice.

Served from 12.30 pm to 2 pm, this is the perfect indulgence after your 10.30 am train journey or before the 2.30 pm departure. Whether paired with a scenic ride or enjoyed on its own, this is an experience not to be missed! Though it’s called afternoon tea, the generous portions often lead to guests leaving with a ‘doggy bag’!

TORPANTAU TO PONTSTICILL (One Way Single Journey)

Enjoy a beautiful one-way steam train ride from Torpantau to Pontsticill.  The trip takes 15 minutes.

Please note this is a one way journey only, so suitable if you are planning to combine a walk or some other mode of transport.  You do not return to where you began the trip.  There are no formal parking facilities at Torpantau station
