RAILWAY 200 AT THE BMR

Join us on Wednesday, 21st May 2025, at Brecon Mountain Railway for a special event celebrating Railway 200, marking 200 years since the dawn of the modern railway. This nationwide initiative commemorates the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825, a pivotal moment that transformed transport and industry across Britain and the world.logo

🚂 What’s Happening?

  • Local Stalls & Displays: Explore exhibits from Merthyr Tydfil Library, Transport for Wales, and Merthyr County Borough Council, showcasing our rich railway heritage and our the local area.

  • Heritage Exhibitions: Delve into the history of Merthyr’s industrial past and its connection to the railway.

  • Workshop Tours: Join guided tours at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM to see our historic American-built Baldwin locomotives up close. Pre-booking required.

  • Meet the Team from Merthyr Library: Discover fascinating stories and artifacts from our local history.

  • Learn About Modern Railways: Understand how railways continue to connect communities across South Wales.

  • Special Feature – Guided Train Journey at 2:30 PM: Embark on a unique journey with local historian Huw Williams, who will share insights into the line’s history and the surrounding landscape. Standard train fare applies; tickets sold separately.

Entry to the event area is free, with separate tickets required for train rides and workshop tours.
