Take the Ride Less Ordinary: Introducing the Cupola Experience at Brecon Mountain Railway

Are you ready for a railway adventure with a difference? If you’re after sweeping views, steam, nostalgia—and a truly elevated perspective—look no further than the Cupola Experience at Brecon Mountain Railway.

What is the Cupola Experience?

Imagine climbing a short vertical ladder into a raised lookout above the guard’s van—a place once used by railway staff for observation. That’s the ‘cupola’: your perch for an hour and a half of sheer scenic magic. You’ll travel the full round-trip route—about 10 miles—passing through mountains, forests, and reservoirs, with the steam locomotive doing all the hard work. You’ll feel the thrill as it negotiates one of the steepest gradients on any heritage railway in the UK.

Why It’s Special

  • Panoramic views: From the cupola, nothing is obscured. You get an elevated lookout with uninterrupted vistas over the Brecon Beacons.

  • Up close with steam: Watch the locomotive in action, struggle and strain up the hills—it’s a front-row seat to the power and beauty of steam engineering.

  • Exclusivity: Only two cupola places are available per departure. If you want a rare vantage point, this is it.

Important Info

  • Duration: 1.5 hours per experience.

  • Who can take part: Over-18s only. Physically and mentally fit; you’ll need to climb a vertical ladder unaided. Not suitable for limited mobility.

  • Price: £30 per person whether adult or (for this experience) child — though note that under-18s are excluded.

  • Departure times: 10:30, 12:30, and 14:30. Times may vary slightly.

Who Should Don This Adventure?

  • Railway enthusiasts or steam buffs who want to see the workings from a unique vantage.

  • Nature lovers who enjoy grand landscapes and want to soak up the wild beauty of the Brecon Beacons in style.

  • Anyone who’s bored of the usual tourist trails and wants something special—a little nostalgia plus an unforgettable view.

How to Book & What to Bring

Make your booking in advance via the BMR website. There are only two cupola seats per train, so these slots go fast. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather (it can be brisk at height!), and be ready for a little adventure.

Bring your camera—or at least your phone—and prepare for photos that will make everyone else jealous.
