Celebrate Railway 200 at the Brecon Mountain Railway – Wednesday 15th October

Join us for a special day of steam, stories, and celebration as we mark Railway 200 — 200 years since the world’s first public railway opened — with a unique event at the Brecon Mountain Railway on Wednesday 15th October.

We’ll be opening our doors for a day that celebrates the past, present, and future of railway heritage in South Wales, with guided workshop tours, a special historian-led train journey, and community displays from local partners.

Go Behind the Scenes – Workshop Tours at 11am & 1pm

Step inside the heart of our heritage railway with a guided tour of the engineering workshops at Pant. Led by our expert team, you’ll discover how our historic locomotives and carriages are restored and maintained.

From the tools to the tales, it’s a fascinating glimpse into the craftsmanship and dedication that keeps our steam trains running.

Workshop tours are free of charge, but places are limited and must be pre-booked in advance.

Steam Through History – 2:30pm Special Train with Local Historian

Step aboard for a special steam-hauled journey into the past, as local historian Huw Williams brings the story of the Brecon Mountain Railway — and the rich industrial landscape it runs through — vividly to life.

As part of our Railway200 celebration, this unique train departs at 2:30 PM and offers a rolling talk exploring the area’s railway heritage, its place in Welsh industry, and how these lines continue to shape our communities today.

Normal train fares apply – book online in advance to secure your seats.

Throughout the day there will be stalls and displays from:

  • The Brecon Mountain Railway
  • Three Valleys Community Rail Partnership
  • Merthyr Libraries
  • Visit Merthyr
  • Cyfarthfa Park & Museum

Each will be sharing fascinating insights into Merthyr’s industrial heritage, its proud railway past, and the exciting things happening locally today.
